Brigham City Branch Report for January 23, 2010 Our October 28 meeting was a highly successful Candidates Meeting giving candidates for Brigham City Mayor and City Council an opportunity to speak to the public. We had the Community Center set up for 100 and the custodian kept adding chairs - estimated attendance was 150. This meeting was co-sponsored with Civic Improvement Club and Ladies Community Club, but AAUW spearheaded it with setting up the date, venue, inviting candidates and moderating it. We did not meet in November due to cancellation of a speaker and some illness among members. December 16 was our traditional international potluck to which we invite foreign exchange students attending Box Elder High School, along with a member of their host families. There are just two students this year, both girls from Japan, and they were delightful guests. We all shared our own backgrounds, as did they, and the girls seemed to have a very good time. Joan Peterson hosted this event at her home. For our January 20 meeting we met at the Fine Arts Center. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Fine Arts Center is a non-profit center dedicated to promoting and providing affordable fine art opportunities in the local community. Susan Neidert, center director, conducted a tour and presented an overview of the non-profit center's goals and programs, which also includes the World of Puppetry Museum and a theater-in-the-round for dramas and live concerts. We are now making plans for our annual scholarship benefit luncheon which is set for Saturday, April 10, at Maddox Ranch House. We are waiting for our speaker to confirm, so won't announce her name in this report. (Maybe by Saturday!) This scholarship is presented to a Box Elder County woman who has returned to higher education after a break in her formal education. We will soon have application forms out in scholarship and women's resource offices in area universities.
