Brigham City Branch Report
2009-2010 Report
Submitted by Sarah Yates

Our program year began in September with the traditional dinner and program at Maddox, which is the time when we collect dues for the coming club season. We were pleased to have two new members this year.

October 21 was a highly successful Candidate Meeting with candidates for Brigham City mayor and City Council an opportunity to speak to the public. We had the community center set up for 100 and the custodian kept adding chairs-estimated attendance was 150. The meeting was co-sponsored with the Civic Improvement Club and Ladies Community Club, but AAUW spearheaded it with setting up the date, venue, inviting candidates and moderating it.

December 10 was our traditional international potluck to which we invite foreign exchange students attending Box Elder High School along with a member of their host families. There are just two students this year, both girls from Japan, and they were delightful guests. We all shared our own backgrounds, as did they, and the girls seemed to have a good time. Thanks to Joan Peterson who hosted this event in her home.

We met at the Fine Arts Center for our January meeting. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, the Fine Arts Center is a non-profit center, dedicated to promoting and providing affordable fine art opportunities in the local community. Susan Neidert, center director, conducted a tour and presented an overview of the non-profit center's goals and programs, which also includes the World of Puppetry Museum and a theatre-in-the-round for dramas and live concerts. We spearheaded a public information meeting on the Utahans for Ethical Government Initiative in February at the Brigham City campus of Utah State University. David Irvine, a former Republican legislator and an attorney in private practice, presented the background and reasons for the initiative. We invited the Civic Improvement Club and the Ladies Community Club to co-sponsor the event.

Our annual scholarship benefit luncheon was held in April at Maddox Ranch House. Glenda Yenni, an AAUW selected professions fellowship recipient, and a current graduate research assistant at Utah State University, was the guest speaker. This scholarship, co-sponsored with Ladies Community Club, is presented to a Box Elder County woman who has returned to higher education after a break in her formal education. This year's recipient is pursuing a degree in nursing.

We will close out the year with another dinner at Maddox, a time to relax and enjoy one another's company before our summer recess.
